BACKGROUND OF THE SEDAN DELIVERY

A few years ago Willys field representatives foresaw the need for a versatile, inexpensive, 4-wheel drive delivery vehicle. They knew such a vehicle could extend the lightweight cargo carrying business from the good highways to the narrow lanes, muddy roads, and rough country that exist in most communities of the world.

The result was the 'Jeep' Sedan Delivery, a pioneer in its field. This vehicle with its high Gross Vehicle Weight, 1/2 ton Rated capacity, 120 cubic feet of cargo space, 104.5 inch wheelbase and a choice of two engines together with four-wheel drive can carry its payload anywhere... on or off the road.

USES OF THE SEDAN DELIVERY

The Sedan Delivery is designed to carry cargo.

It can distribute or deliver goods, equipment or services to customers in territories where roads are rough and difficult or where no roads exist. The Sedan Delivery's ability to get into the back country makes it ideal for grocers, cleaners, caterers, florists, photographers, plumbers, carpenters or contractors, painters, engineers or surveyors who have to do business under such conditions.

For example, in Peru, warehouse stock is delivered in the small inland general stores by Willys 4-wheel drive Sedan Deliveries. In Iceland, these vehicles are used by doctors when they make their circuit of outlying areas to transport medical supplies to community nurses.

It can be used as a mobile base for radio broadcasting, circulating libraries, salesmen's displays and private and public utility repair equipment. The Sedan Delivery can take this equipment cross-country to areas where it is needed and store valuable goods under lock and key when they are not in use. In Korea, missionary societies use the Sedan Delivery for mobile audio-visual work. In Brazil, these vehicles are fitted with public address sound equipment for promoting the sale of consumer goods (such as aspirin and chewing gum) in the inland territories.

It is very useful to local governments as a police wagon, rural mail truck or maintenance truck. In Colombia, Sedan Deliveries are used by the Po1ic.e. The military use the Sedan Delivery as a communications maintenance and supply car.

These then are the major junctions of the Willys 4-wheel drive Sedan Delivery.  This has told you w-hat the Willys Sedan Delivery is used for. Now, explore the particular selling features that explain -why it is capable of performing these jobs.

SELLING FEATURES OF THE SEDAN DELIVERY

1. Versatility

Versatility of the 4-wheel drive Sedan Delivery stems from two factors -- the fact that it can travel both on highways and also cross country, and secondly, that it can do a great variety of jobs.

First, the 4-wheel drive and the powerful engine, together with the low transfer case, enable this vehicle to traverse rough country and enter areas inaccessible to conventional 2 -wheel drive delivery vehicles. However, on good surface roads, the Willys Sedan Delivery can operate in 2 -wheel drive and reach speeds of better than 60 miles per hour. The Willys 4-wheel drive Sedan Delivery is highly maneuverable. It can make a complete turn in a radius of only 1 112 times its length. It can knife through passages as narrow as feet. Its 8 1/8 inch road clearance and 104 112 inch wheelbase enable it to maneuver over and around obstacles that would prevent a longer, wider or more low-slung vehicle from getting through.

Second, it has over 100 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seat. An extra 10 cubic feet can be gained by removing the right front seat. The vehicle can be easily hosed or washed out because the vinyl upholstery is waterproof and the rest of the interior is rust resistant. Further, the easy access rear doors are designed to admit a load of almost the entire size of the interior cargo space (71 inches long x 58 1/4 inches wide x 48 314 inches high). Besides carrying straight cargo loads this vehicle can be converted into a mobile power source by the installation of auxiliary equipment attached to one of the power take-offs. These factors have caused businessmen the world over to re-evaluate their old methods of shipping cargo to areas where road systems are poor or non-existent.

2. Power

The power of the Sedan Delivery comes from a combination of several factors :

Choice of either 75 HP "F" head Hurricane engine or the 115 HP "L" head Super Hurricane engine

Gear ranges to suit the road conditions

Four-wheel drive- traction

Properly controlled by gear reduction (6 forward, 2 reverse speed combinations available) to suit the road and driving all four wheels, this fully loaded vehicle travels cross country, over rough terrain, up and down grades and through streams and mud conditions that would hopelessly mire a 2-wheel drive delivery van.

When driven in 4-wheel drive the Willys Sedan Delivery has the advantage of extra traction, thus reducing the tendency of the wheels to spin when additional power is transmitted through the power train. This also permits the vehicle to move forward even if only one set of wheels has traction.

When very difficult road conditions are encountered it is advisable to equip the Willys Sedan Delivery with a winch (optional equipment). The winch increases the ability of the vehicle to pull itself or other vehicles out of places that would even mire 4-wheel drive units.

The Willys Sedan Delivery has other power features. It can be used to take power to isolated areas for use on auxiliary equipment. Power is delivered to such equipment through the front and center PTO's. Regulated by a governor (optional equipment), the correct amount of horsepower and torque is continuously transmitted to this auxiliary equipment.

3. Economy

The Sedan Delivery's economy of operation is derived from the following factors :

Performance of delivery jobs that previously had to be done by other more expensive means.

Four -cylinder Hurricane engine

Straight-line design and rugged construction

Extreme usefulness of this vehicle

Long vehicle life

For the main factor that will sell this vehicle from an economy standpoint contrast the cost of maintenance and operation of a Sedan Delivery with the cost of transporting cargo in any other way. If there is enough work to keep one 4-wheel drive vehicle busy in pickup or delivery work and power transmission, it can be readily established that the Willys Sedan Delivery is the most inexpensive vehicle available. Compared with railway express rates, heavy or large size truck delivery rates, air-cargo costs or non-mechanized means of transporting cargo, the cost of Sedan Delivery operations is indeed inexpensive.

The new Hurricane engine, evolved from the tested "L" head model used in World War II Jeeps, can develop its rated HP on low grade gasoline. The gear ratios are designed to permit this engine to supply more than adequate torque and horsepower to take the vehicle anywhere the customer may want to go with its rated half-ton load. Therefore, the customer is not paying for an oversized power plant to do the job.

The original cost of this vehicle is low and it is built to stand up under punishment with a minimum of servicing. The straightline design of the Willys Sedan Delivery and the lack of excess chrome and curving metal adornment prevent this vehicle from being as severely damaged as often as the ordinary delivery van. However, when repairs are needed, its 18-gauge steel components are easier to repair or replace. This saves many labor hours, thereby decreasing maintenance costs.

This vehicle, built for off -the -road use, has a frame, airplane -type shock absorbers and straight-line body construction designed to stand the stresses and strains that occur with rough use or when the vehicle is used to transmit power from either PTO point. Ruggedness is built into the Willys Sedan Delivery because it is expected to tackle the rough jobs.

The size of its cargo space, its maneuverability, and its easy adaptability as a mobile source of power enable this vehicle to perform many different jobs, thus amortizing its cost over a broader range of duties. Naturally, the more jobs this vehicle can perform and the more hours per day it can be put to work, the smaller the cost of any one job. This means economical operation. The initial cost is also amortized over a very long and useful life because the vehicle is built to withstand punishment.

4. Dependability

The Willys Sedan Delivery is designed to do the job and stay on the job all year 'round. The rugged construction, tested engine, straight-line pressed steel 18-gauge metal design, airplane -type shock absorbers, heavy duty springs; reinforced frame -- all are designed to assure staying on the job with a minimum of repair time. However, when service is needed, the accessibility of the engine, the power train and the clean line design permit speedy maintenance.

"Down time" is further lessened for the Willys owner because the great interchangeability of parts permits adequate stocking for the whole line at low cost.

5. Safety

The Willys Sedan Delivery is safe to operate because it has a low center of gravity which gives great tractability and prevents tipping. Extra heavy brake linings on all four wheels allow the Sedan Delivery to stop quickly and reduce the possibility of skidding. The engine braking power holds the speed of the vehicle to the maximum speed of the gear in use when going down slopes. These features all mean safe and dependable operation.

Another important safety factory is the wide vision windshield and large side windows that give the driver full eye-range visibility minimizing the possibility of accidents.

The vehicle can be depended upon to perform its cargo-carrying job anywhere, on or off the road.

THERE IS NO DELIVERY PROBLEM WHEN YOU USE A WILLYS 4-WHEEL DRIVE PANEL DELIVERY, AND THIS "GET THROUGH" ABILITY MEANS MONEY TO YOUR CUSTOMER.
