Here is the first step in extending medical coverage
to areas lacking adequate road systems and to those organizations in
need of inexpensive and versatile medical equipment.
Willys has made available two compact, maneuverable,
inexpensive, two-stretcher ambulances. Both may be equipped with either
2 or 4-wheel drive. In
4-wheel drive it can go quickly to
the scene of an emergency (regardless of road or weather conditions),
pick up patients, and bring them out safely to the hospital or
dispensary. Two-wheel drive units can go anywhere regular roads exist.
One of the main reasons for the popularity of these
vehicles lies in their ability to act as a sedan delivery, laundry van,
light pickup, etc., when not needed as an ambulance. This additional
work quickly amortizes the vehicle's original purchase price and upkeep
--
and places emergency medical
service within the reach of every manufacturing plant, plantation,
government agency, and
municipality that has a medical problem in
a
roadless area.
The sales problem is essentially one of recognizing
where a need for this type of medical service exists. Once this need is
discovered, the customer must be shown the following advantages.
The vehicle can go anywhere;
It has two-stretcher capacity;
It is inexpensive;
It can be used for many other jobs.
Ambulance business
is
''plus" bushes s
.
a) An ambulance sale is new business. It is not at
the expense of another 4-wheel drive vehicle.
b) There is more profit
in an
ambulance sale
than in
a Jeep, Truck, Station Wagon, or
Sedan Delivery.
c) An ambulance is not a luxury, but a necessity
--
which often means an extra quota
or
budget allocation.
The key point --
Ambulances are sold
--
not ordered!
There are two models of this ambulance, the Willys
Utility Ambulance, and the Willys Custom Utility Ambulance. Both are
built on the 4 x
4 Sedan Delivery chassis. Both
offer a
choice of either
2
or 4-wheel drive
and
bothoffer a choice of either the
4-cylinder "F"
head
75-HP
engine, or the 6-cylinder "L" head
115-HP
engine.

1. "Go Anywhere Ability
The ability to go anywhere is the distinguishing
feature of the Willys Utility Ambulance when compared with
-any
conventional 2-wheel drive model. Only 4-wheel drive ambulances can
effectively operate in muddy, inundated, roadless, under-developed, or
disaster stricken areas. The Willys Utility Ambulance can go straight to
the scene of the emergency because it has the power to do so.
2. Power
With 4-wheel drive the powerful Hurricane and Super
Hurricane engines transmit power to all four wheels in six forward gear
speeds. - (The vehicles go anywhere in 2-wheel drive on the highways.
)
As with the other Willys 4-wheel drive vehicles, the
winch is available as optional equipment. With it the vehicle can pull
itself or other vehicles out of conditions that mire down even 4-wheel
drive units.
3. Ruggedness
The Utility Ambulance is specifically designed for
off-the -road operation. The reinforced frame, airplane-type shock
absorbers, straight-line 20-gauge metal body construction, waterproof
plastic seat upholstery, and rust proof interior are made to stand the
stresses and strains of off-the-road use.
4. Maneuverability
Lastly, the ambulance is maneuverable. The short
wheelbase (1 04-1 12 inches), narrow turning radius , and small outside
dimensions (6 feet wide -
6 feet high) enable this vehicle to
go over, under, between, and around obstacles that would stop larger,
bulkier, clumsier, 2 -wheel drive ambulances.
5.
Capacity
By arranging -two
stretcher racks on the passenger side of the Utility Ambulance
compartment, Willys has doubled the capacity of ordinary, more expensive
2-wheel drive ambulances. There is still room for a folding side seat
opposite the stretchers for an attendant. His front seat is folded
forward when the stretcher is placed in position on the rack Few 2-wheel
drive ambulances can handle two patients --
and none can do so with such a
compact vehicle. The Willys Utility Ambulance is also equipped with
these essential ambulance trimmings:
First aid kit
Siren
Axe
Roof Ventilator
Spare tire mounted inside body on left-hand side
White enamel finish for body and interior (optional
equipment)
Red flashing signal (optional equipment)
None of this equipment impedes the vehicle's
usefulness as a carrier of cargo.
6. Economy
The Utility Ambulance sells at about one-half the
price of a conventional one-litter, 2-wheel drive unit. It has a low
market price because it is a small, compact vehicle with a straight line
design. It is sturdier and more maneuverable than the typical chrome
-plated, plush, nonfunctional, 2-wheel drive, one -litter ambulance. The
Willys Utility Ambulance has alll the essential and none of the frills
that add so heavily to the purchase price of any other type of
ambulance.
Low maintenance cost is another feature of the Willys
Utility Ambulance. It is built to stand up under the rough punishment
that a 4-wheel drive vehicle must take in the field.
All-around usefulness is a distinctive feature of the
Willys Utility Ambulance. The attendant's seat folds up to afford over
100 cubic feet of open cargo space in the interior of the ambulance.
This interior is rust resistant. The plastic seats are impervious to
water so that the whole interior can be disinfected or hosed out in a
few minutes. It is easily kept clean and sanitary. The large rear doors
permit a load of almost the same dimensions as the ambulance interior to
be placed in the vehicle. The skid rails on
the floor of the ambulance also facilitate easy loading.
These features ideally fit the ambulance to act as a
light pickup, sedan delivery, laundry van, or equipment carrier for the
owner when not being used for emergency ambulance calls. The vehicle is
kept in operation more steadily, allowing its cost to be amortized over
a number of different jobs.
