GOVERNORS

These are the instruments of control that maintain vehicle and auxiliary equipment operations within acceptable, safe limits. The story of the relationship of governors to Willys equipment is the story of control.

There are three main types of governors used on Universal 'Jeeps' and 'Jeep' trucks - the variable speed, constant velocity and velocity governors.

VARIABLE SPEED GOVERNOR

This governor is available for factory or field installation where a number of constant speeds are required such as in buzz saw work, plowing, various belt driven operations. A relatively constant speed is maintained regardless of the torque requirements. This governor has 9 settings, starting at 1000 r.p.m. and increasing in steps of 200 r.p.m. up to a maximum setting of 2600 r.p.m. It is cab controlled and can be engaged or disengaged with ease. This governor can be overridden by the accelerator pedal at any time, a feature many tractors lack. The governor is driven from a belt to which it is permanently attached and operates by controlling the throttle.

Since the engine power is transmitted through the transmission case, it is easy to see how the 6 forward transmission speeds multiply the actual number of controlled governor speeds up to 54 since the governor has 9 settings. An excellent feature of this system is the fact that all of these controlled speeds are available to the user at the front and rear powered axles, as well as at the Power-take-off points.

CONSTANT SPEED GOVERNOR

The Hoof governor is a factory pre-set mechanism that maintains engine speed within, very narrow limits at a constant speed no matter what the torque requirements develop. It is designed to do one specific job such as insure that the Jeep Welder maintains a constant speed regardless of the amperage demands made on the welder. It is engaged and disengaged by hand and is only operative when the particular piece of auxiliary equipment is being used. This governor cannot be overridden by the gas pedal, it simply eliminates gas pedal control.  This governor is automatically included with the auxiliary equipment for which it is required.

VELOCITY GOVERNOR

This is the conventional governor known to most of the public. The object here is to keep the velocity of the engine down thus preventing the motor from racing. Damage to the engine, due to excessive speeds, and "jack rabbit" starts, is eliminated. This governor is optional equipment at extra cost and has to be specified with your order. It is pre-set, operates continuously - and cannot be overridden. When the fuel mixture is sucked into the cylinders at high speeds, a vacuum is created. This vacuum closes a butterfly valve which in turn cuts the throttle.

A complete set of charts indicating the Power-take-off and belt pulley revolutions per minute, and vehicle speeds in m.p.h. and k.p.h. in both power-take-off gear ratios available, can be found on Pages 2-T-153 and 4 of the Mechanic's Manual on the Model C J-3B Universal and Farm Jeep.

WILLYS GOVERNORS ARE DESIGNED TO DO A JOB. KNOW THE JOBS THAT THE CUSTOMER HAS TO PERFORM AND SELL HIM THE GOVERNOR HE NEEDS.
